Kenya
: everything’s coming up roses…
In the previous edition
of Filclair Infos, we mentioned the fitting out by KORDES (the world’s
foremost rose breeder) of 6000 m2 of Meridian Series production greenhouses
in Kenya with double ridge openings and continuous lateral ventilation
(ALC).
FAt
the end of February 2003, KORDES was organising open days to which all
the rose growers of Eastern Africa were invited. It was an excellent opportunity
for them to inform themselves about FILCLAIR greenhouses, at a time when
the replacement of old wooden installations is on each of their agendas.
The demonstration days that KORDES holds every year
serve to present its different varieties to some 80 Kenyan rose growers.
In this very convivial atmosphere, contacts are made, a few orders are
given and, of course, many discussions of a professional nature are entered
into, during which the advice of the world leader is listened to and carefully
noted, especially as regards the choice of a greenhouse and its equipment.

Once again, know-how and technology won the day against
price, which cannot be the only consideration, particularly when the economic
stakes and the future of a firm are put in the balance.
In Kenya, 90% of greenhouses are used for rose growing
and, while there may not be many customers, it should be borne in mind
that many of them are large farms, or even multinational corporations.
The fact that FILCLAIR now benefits from a good image not merely in the
country but more especially at KORDES or DE RUITHERS (another large rose
breeder in the region) is a very positive factor for future installations.
The potential market is directly linked to the replacement
of the wooden greenhouses and to the development of certain firms. Today,
the wood that accounts for a large part of the existing installations
is being abandoned in preference for metal, which is cheaper over the
long run and has better technical performance characteristics.
